Harpinder Sandhu

Appointed by: British Columbia General Employees’ Union (nominated by the unions, other than the BCGEU, that collectively bargain on behalf of plan members)
Committee(s): Benefits, Communications, Responsible Investment
Board term: 2015–present

Harpinder Sandhu was appointed to the board in April 2015 by the British Columbia General Employees’ Union (BCGEU). His nomination came from the Public Service Pension Advisory Committee, which is made up of members of unions other than the BCGEU.

Harpinder has worked for BC Assessment as a property appraiser for nine years and as a business consultant since 2017. He is the vice-president of Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 1767 (the union representing BC Assessment employees). His appraisal experience with land redevelopment and with residential, industrial and strata properties provides the board with context for real estate as a pension fund investment.

Harpinder is a member of the West Coast North American Steering Committee of the Principles for Responsible Investment Association. He has a passion for responsible investment initiatives surrounding issues such as climate change, diversity and inclusion, and labour management.

In his work on the communications committee, his primary concentration is the importance of public awareness around the value of defined benefit pension plans. As part of his pension and governance education, he achieved Foundations of Trust Management Standards and Advanced Trust Management Standards certifications from the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.

Harpinder graduated from Simon Fraser University with bachelor of arts degrees in Geography and Economics; his education focused on international trade, finance, sustainable urban development and public policy.
