Tell us if a plan member dies before retiring
Please let us know if a plan member dies so we can pay the death benefit to their beneficiary or estate.
The death of a loved one is a difficult time, with many details to take care of and many decisions to make. Contact us as soon as possible after the death of a plan member so we can make your experience as easy as possible.
Death of an active memberWhen an active member dies, their employer will notify BC's Public Service Pension Plan. As a spouse, beneficiary, executor or next of kin, call us so we can help you with the details.
Death of an inactive memberWhen an inactive member who has left their pension contributions in the plan dies, the spouse, beneficiary or executor should contact the plan so we can let you know the next steps.
Information we need
When an active or inactive member dies before retirement, contact us and include the following information:
- Plan member identification – two personal identifiers such as their Person ID, date of birth, telephone number or address
- Contact information for the executor named in the will
- A copy of the death certificate
What happens next
We will send a declaration form to the member's spouse, beneficiary or estate to confirm spousal and beneficiary information. This form must be notarized and returned to us, along with a copy of the will, if applicable.
We will then send the spouse, beneficiary(ies) or estate a Pre-retirement death benefits statement outlining the death benefits they will receive and steps required to receive payment.
If you are the executor of the estate, we can only share information about the estate portion of a death benefit; we cannot share information about whether the benefit is payable to one or more beneficiaries.
