Leaving your job

Leaving a job with an employer participating in the plan? Find out what you can do with your plan contributions.

Apply for an immediate pension

You can apply for a pension if you leave your job and are 55 or older (50 if you are a member of certain designated public safety occupations).

If you are younger than 55 (50) when you leave your job, you can apply for your pension once you have reached your earliest retirement age. If you do not meet minimum age and contributory service requirements, your pension may be reduced.

For general public service employees, your pension may be reduced for pensionable service before April 1, 2018,  if you are:

  • Between age 55 (50) and 60 (55), and your age plus contributory service is less than 85
  • Between age 60 (55) and 65 (60), with fewer than two years of contributory service

Your pension may be reduced for pensionable service on and after April 1, 2018, if you are:

  • Between age 55 (50) and 60 (55), with fewer than 35 years of contributory service
  • Between age 60 (55) and 65 (60), with fewer than two years of contributory service

Different early retirement rules and reduction factors apply to full-time ambulance paramedics who are members of CUPE Local 873.
