Details on potential changes to extended health coverage

Learn about the potential changes the board is considering for retirement group health benefits.

Establishing grandparenting periods

Grandparenting means that retired members taking certain drugs will see no change in coverage for a set amount of time. For example, members who are taking what will become a Tier 2 drug will have one to three years to transition to the new coverage level. Once the time period expires, reimbursement will change to the coverage level that will be set for Tier 2.

The types of drugs likely to be grandparented are those drugs that are medically necessary for chronic conditions where there may be some challenges if a member abruptly switches to an alternative drug.

Active members would not be eligible for grandparenting once they retire and join the retirement group health benefits program, even if they are currently using what will become a Tier 2 drug.
