Plan change details for retired members
Learn how certain plan changes affect you as a retired member
Who is affected?
If you are age 65 or older with service between April 1, 2006 and March 31, 2018, you will see a higher lifetime pension immediately; this means your October 2019 pension payment will be higher.
For the vast majority of retired members, if you are under age 65 on October 1, 2019, your lifetime pension will increase and your bridge benefit will decrease, resulting in no change to your total pension payment. At age 65 when your bridge payment ends, you will see a higher lifetime pension amount than your original pension calculation.
These changes are effective going forward (there will be no retroactive payments) and you will be notified when pension amendments are completed in 2019.
Certain groups are affected differently by the plan changes:
- Changes effective October 1, 2019, also apply to retired members who worked as public safety employees (including correctional employees and certain BC Ambulance Service paramedics in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 873).
- Changes effective October 1, 2019, (and changes effective April 1, 2018) do not apply to judges, masters and members of the legislative assembly.
